Safety Around Swing Sets

You’ve decided to build that swing set and you’ve bought the plans and materials. There is only one thing left to worry about and that is swing set safety. Because our children are playing in the backyard rather than in a park some parents become a little lax on the safety rules but remember that most accidents happen at home partially because that is where we spend most of our time.

Before putting a swing set in your yard know the location where it is going. Measure the space and make sure there is plenty of shade especially during the hottest months of summer. Another consideration is the distance from  obstructions such as fences and trees . Be sure that they are far enough away to avoiding bumping into them.

The set must be secure and anchored properly and the landing area should be safe. The best filler to cushion falls is ground rubber, wood chips, or sand. Make sure you have enough of whatever material you buy as you will be repairing and replenishing this throughout the year.

One last safety consideration is supervision. Older children do not need to be supervised but younger children should always be under parent supervision while playing outside. If children from other families are playing on your swing set or playground equipment, make sure they have permission from their parents.
